The word "couture" can conjure up different feelings for people, from excitement to disdain. It is perhaps the apex of frivolity and excess. Politics aside, it's fun to look at pretty things. Here are a few selections from Alexandre Vauthier, Jean Paul Gaultier and La Perla that caught my eye.
Alexandre Vauthier's collection was inspired by Emmanuelle Seigner’s character in “Frantic.” Apparently he nailed it because Seigner, sitting in the front row, caught on to it immediately. “I’m wearing this black leather dress in the movie and he did it in green suede, updating it for today,” she said. There were also playful winks to bondage and sexy cutouts. (Images 1-5)
Jean Paul Gaultier decided last year that he would exclusively do couture collections going forward and this year he presented, "61 ways to say yes." For the schizo bride, Gaultier sent out a slew of mash-up dresses that were literally split personalities. There were 80's riffs, of course, and a good sprinkling of some "WTF's" - like the Dorothy meets Wicker Man combo worn by Lindsey Wixson. The whimsy of Gaultier never seems to get old. (Images 6-14)
Italian label La Perla showed us what they called "inside/out," a collection of lingerie meshed with active wear. “Playing with no rules you arrive at this,” said creative director Emiliano Rinaldi. Total freak of nature 44 year old Naomi Campbell closed out the show. (images 15-21)
